Overview

Give students hands-on experience of healthcare careers with a practical workshop from Medical Mavericks.

Students use real medical equipment to explore the skills healthcare professionals use every day. They could take blood from simulated arms, record and interpret ECGs, use ultrasound and test lung function. Students can also put their coordination to the test using keyhole-surgery simulators.

The activities connect GCSE and A level science with real workplace applications. Students can see why their curriculum learning matters while exploring potential next steps.

The workshop looks beyond the best-known healthcare careers. Students discover roles including radiography, paramedicine, biomedical science, physiotherapy and operating department practice.

They also explore different routes into healthcare, including apprenticeships and pathways that do not require a degree. The delivery team share their own journeys and explain what their jobs involve.

Students leave with a clearer picture of the opportunities available and what they can do now to work towards them. Teachers also receive curriculum links and feedback to support Gatsby Benchmarks 3, 4 and 5.

The practical format supports students with different needs to take part. Activities can be adapted for physical or sensory needs, with requirements discussed with teachers beforehand.
