Students work in teams and use problem solving skills and their science knowledge to conduct fun practical, hands-on experiments. The lessons introduce the problem solving and team working aspect of engineering. Energy Quest also looks at the different types of engineering and kinds of engineers there are in the world. This is a great way for your students to think of the kinds of careers they could look forward to in the future.
The lesson follows the story of Carlotta and a group of her friends lost in the woods. One of whom has an injured leg, and with a mobile phone that’s quickly losing battery power. Your students are challenged to help the group of friends to generate energy, make clean water and design a shelter. All they have to use are the limited contents of Carlotta’s backpack.
The options look into the science around:
making a fruit battery
building a basic filtration system
designing thermal insulation
The hands-on practical sessions use equipment which should be available in all school laboratories. They can be either delivered individually as separate lessons or run together in groups. Energy Quest is free, adaptable and comes with downloadable resources, videos and a lesson presentation.
