Explore the world of energy with your students

Energy plays a vital role in our everyday lives and will be key to building a more sustainable future. Our research shows that young people are passionate about sustainability and want to make a positive difference. This collection of free, quality-assured activities, resources and case studies helps students explore where a career in energy could take them.

Over 2 terms, students will discover topics such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and the wide variety of careers available across the sector. They'll learn how people working in energy are helping to tackle some of today's biggest challenges and shape the world around us.

How do I use this collection?

Follow the simple steps below to get started. You'll find links to the activities and resources throughout the page, or you can scroll down to access them all.

First term:

  1. log on to Skills Miner: Home Energy. Engage your students with this interactive online game that focuses on energy efficiency and home energy management. Students will learn about the importance of energy conservation and the skills needed to work in the energy sector.

  2. order a set of our free Green careers posters showcasing careers in the energy sector. These posters include discussion points and homework tasks to inspire students.

Second term:

  1. register for Discover Energy with Megawatt. This hands-on experience allows students to explore the world of energy production and distribution. Through interactive modules, students will learn about different energy sources, the challenges of energy distribution, and the importance of sustainable energy practices

  2. share My world, my future – where can STEM take me with your students to explore STEM inspiration and career resources, including podcasts, competitions, and days out

  3. use real job stories of engineers working in the energy sector. Divide your students into small groups and have them discuss one of the case studies and reflect on:

  • what was the main energy challenge addressed?

  • why was it important to find a solution to this problem?

  • what positive impacts did the engineering solutions have?

  • what aspects of the engineers' work in the case study inspire you the most?

  • what did you learn from this real job story about the role of engineers in energy generation?

  • how has this case study influenced your thoughts about pursuing a career in engineering?
