Engineers help solve the world's most urgent challenges, from combating climate change to addressing cybersecurity issues to ensuring clean water access for all, and much more. Whatever your students are interested in, there’s a career in engineering for everyone.

Why is engineering important?

Engineers help create a safer, greener, happier and more equal society. Engineers solve complex challenges, from improving transportation to creating solutions for global issues like climate change, clean energy, and public health.  

Engineers also help develop new technologies that shape the future, enhance communication and improve everyday life. For example, without engineers we wouldn’t have smartphones, medical devices or solar panels! 

There’s high demand for engineers in the UK. From apprentices to technicians and graduates to postgraduates – engineers are needed at all levels, in a wide range of sectors.  

Opportunities in engineering

There are lots of great opportunities that come with a career in engineering. Engineers are paid well. The average salaries of professional engineers are competitive with jobs in other sectors. For specialist roles and experienced Chartered Engineers, average salaries can exceed £80,000.  

Important skills in engineering are also highly transferable. Project management, teamwork, communication, problem solving and the ability to be creative are highly valued by employers.

Engineers work all over the world in lots of different sectors. There are engineering jobs in finance, tech & digital, film and TV, beauty and more! Engineers get to work in a wide variety of public and private organisations.  

The UK needs people from all backgrounds to follow their passion and use their unique, creative minds to improve people’s lives through engineering and technology.   

Students don’t have to be top of the class in maths and science to be an engineer. Engineers enjoy thinking of solutions, designing, fixing and modifying things. If this sounds like your students, an engineering career could be for them!
