Tackling climate change with tech

Young people care deeply about climate change and want to be part of the solution. This collection helps them discover how technology is being used to tackle some of the world's biggest challenges, while exploring the exciting STEM careers behind it.

Through free, quality-assured activities, resources and real-world stories, students will learn about innovative tech solutions to climate change and the people creating them. The collection can be delivered over 2 terms and is designed to help students see how STEM skills can make a difference.

All the experiences and resources are free, available online and quality-assured.

How do I use this collection?

Follow these 6 simple steps to help your students explore climate solutions, discover inspiring STEM careers and see the positive impact technology can have on the future. You'll find links to the activities and resources throughout the page, or you can scroll down to access them all.

First term

1. order our free Green Careers posters for your school

2. register for the Climate Schools Programme! Empower your students to explore innovative solutions to climate change and develop skills with the Climate Schools Programme

3. invite a Tech She Can Champion into your school. Tech She Can Champions are volunteers who visit schools virtually or in person to inspire future generations about a career in tech. They can offer a range of experiences from workshops to assemblies, supported by Tech She Can educational resources

Second term

1. share our leaflet My world my future, where STEM can take me with your students. A 4-page downloadable guide for students of all ages, with suggested STEM inspiration and career resources to explore at home. It includes podcasts, competitions and days out

2. take part in Innovate for climate change. A 7-session introductory computing course that supports students in creating a community focused, climate action app prototype. Students will work in pairs or teams to design and create an app prototype focused on one or more of the 5 climate action UN Sustainable Development Goals for a community they are familiar with and care about

3. use the real job stories of engineers and technicians working to combat climate change. Divide your students into small groups and have them discuss one of the case studies and reflect on:

   • what was the main environmental challenge addressed?

   • why was it important to find a solution to this problem?

   • what positive impacts did the engineering solutions have on the environment and the community?

   • what aspects of the engineers' work in the real job story inspire you the most?

   • what did you learn about the role of engineers in addressing climate change?

   • how has this story influenced your thoughts about pursuing a career in engineering?
