Inspiring the next generation with AI, tech and digital skills

Technology is shaping every aspect of our lives - from the way we communicate to the careers that are emerging at an unprecedented pace. For secondary school teachers and careers leaders, ensuring students develop strong digital skills and an awareness of opportunities in tech is more important than ever.

Seven students and a teacher work in a school computer lab. All the young people are looking at their individual screens on their desks.

With AI and digital transformation redefining the job market, we must equip young people not just with technical knowledge but also with the confidence to explore careers in this space. Whether they dream of designing ethical AI, developing cybersecurity solutions, or creating digital experiences, understanding the breadth of careers in technology is essential.

The importance of digital skills and AI literacy

AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s embedded in everyday life, from recommendation algorithms to large language models. Schools play a crucial role in preparing students for a world where AI will be integral to most careers. AI in schools and colleges from Computing at School highlights key aspects of AI education, including ethical considerations, practical applications, and career pathways.

For students aged 13+, How to use AI responsibly is a valuable resource that helps them understand AI’s potential and limitations. This guide encourages students to critically assess AI’s outputs, consider bias, and explore responsible usage – a vital skill for both academic and professional settings.

Helping students explore careers in tech

Many young people still perceive the tech industry as inaccessible or only for those who excel at coding. Careers in technology span a vast range of roles, from UX design and data analysis to cybersecurity and AI ethics. Computing at School’s Inspiring girls into tech resource is a fantastic starting point for addressing gender imbalances in tech and showcasing inspiring role models.

To help students find careers that align with their skills and interests, the tech careers quiz is a great interactive tool. It provides insights into various career paths, helping students discover opportunities they may not have considered before.

Bringing AI and careers into the classroom

As educators, we can embed discussions about AI and digital careers into everyday teaching:

  • use real-world examples of AI in different sectors, from healthcare to environmental science
  • incorporate career profiles into lessons, highlighting diverse routes into the industry
  • encourage hands-on experience, such as coding projects, ethical AI debates and cybersecurity challenges
  • promote role models and diversity, ensuring students see representation in tech careers

By empowering students with knowledge and opportunities, we can inspire them to take their first steps towards a future in technology. Whether they become AI researchers, software developers, or digital policy makers, their understanding of AI and digital skills will be invaluable.
