Introducing the Engineer your future careers resource
By Amy Lawrence, Careers and Competition Manager, EngineeringUK
In celebration of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, we are delighted to launch our new ‘Engineer your future’ PowerPoint presentation, created in collaboration with EngineeringUK’s Careers Working Group (CWG).
The presentation informs and inspires young people about the range of careers in engineering and technology. Through the careers information included in our resource we aim to build their understanding about what engineering is, what engineers do and routes into engineering. This presentation can be used by educators, career practitioners, STEM Ambassadors, business volunteers and outreach practitioners looking to lead careers discussions with young people.
A key focus throughout the resource is demonstrating how young people can use engineering skills to change the world and pave the way to a better future for everyone. This includes a spotlight on 6 ways engineers and technicians are currently working towards the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through tackling climate change, improving air quality, and managing waste and recycling.
We are thrilled to have worked with over 20 Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) to bring together a collection of job titles to show the variety of roles across different engineering and technology sectors. Their valuable input will help young people to see the breadth of opportunities available, as well as a taster of job roles that are likely to appear in the future!
With a nod to our Tomorrow’s Engineers Week theme, ‘Power up your passion’, we also highlight to young people how engineering provides the opportunity to turn their interests and hobbies into a career they love, whether their interests are in sports, gaming, cosmetics or wellbeing.
We are always so proud to showcase inspiring case studies across our resources. This time we are delving into the stories of 8 legends from the Neon collection and ‘This is Engineering’ campaign. We meet Eneni, a Robotics Engineer, who reflects on how engineering provides the freedom to explore creativity through technology. We also meet Lewis, a Project Development Manager and one of our new Neon case studies, who reflects on the importance of apprenticeships.
Of course, it’s the wonderful presenters using this resource, and discussing their experiences, that will really spark the interest and imagination of young people. We have been delighted to work with STEM Learning to ensure our presentation is useful for anyone who wants to lead a careers discussion. This includes creating engaging content, detailed presenter notes with suggested ‘build’ activities, and an editable slide to help presenters bring their stories to life.
Alongside this presentation, we have also published a top tips guide for presenters. This brief guide highlights how to adapt and get the most out of our new resource whilst leading engaging and inclusive careers discussions.
The UK needs more engineers, and a more diverse future workforce with the necessary skills to enable us to thrive. We really hope presenters enjoy using this new resource as we work together to show young people why they should choose engineering.
