Creating a Big Bang at Parliament

Date published: 24 September 2024

We’re thrilled that, for many years, the Houses of Parliament have played host to some of our Big Bang Competition stars. Young people who’ve entered The Competition get to showcase their innovative projects to MPs and members of the House of Lords, as well as network with our audience of special guests.

The event also highlights the importance of STEM to the success and growth of the UK.

Last year we were delighted that Ranita Ariyibi, our UK Young Engineer of the Year 2023 and student at Colchester County High School for Girls, spoke to a captive audience about her Big Bang Competition experience. From the process and skills learnt during her project development, to the judging stages and showcase at The Big Bang Fair, she spoke about experiencing something she’ll treasure. She'll take that with her as she continues to develop her project InterSign (an interpretation device) – as well as other projects in the future.

Big Bang at Parliament will take place later in the year. We look forward to sharing some pictures with you!

Entering The Big Bang Competition is something I genuinely couldn’t recommend more. If you’d have asked me a month ago if I thought I’d be making a speech at Parliament I probably would have thought I was dreaming, but like many things I’ve experienced through The Big Bang Competition, the unexpected typically turns out to be the good.

Programmes like The Big Bang are crucial for igniting a passion for STEM among young people from all backgrounds and encouraging more of them to consider future careers in engineering and technology.

It’s my first time at Parliament – I’ve spoken to so many people and had so much fun today. I’ve got so much out of The Competition – it’s made me think STEM is great and that I can do it!
