How the network has helped create opportunities for me and my students

By Clare Doherty, Head of Technology, St Mary's College

I am delighted to share my experience as a member of the EUK Education teacher network. I have been teaching technology, design, and engineering for the past 29 years at St. Mary’s College, a Catholic all-ability girls' school in Northern Ireland. I am dedicated to inspiring young minds and promoting STEM education.

In 2004, I was appointed Head of Technology and Design at St. Mary’s College. Our school, which caters to 870 students aged 11 to 18, has always been a hub of innovation and creativity. Over the years, I've introduced several initiatives to promote STEM, entrepreneurship, and innovation among our students. One of our most successful events is the annual Engineers Week, which attracts over 1,000 students from local secondary and primary schools.

I joined the EUK Education teacher network in 2021. This role has allowed me to establish a growing network of teachers, third-level course providers, industry professionals, and STEM partners, all working together to promote engineering and STEM career pathways.  My involvement has allowed me to regularly meet with professionals throughout the UK, experts from EngineeringUK and beyond.

Being a part of the teacher network has been an incredibly positive and motivational experience. It has provided me with the opportunity to connect with like-minded teachers and partner organisations, all dedicated to promoting STEM to our young people. It has been an excellent way to stay updated on the latest developments and opportunities in the field of STEM education.

Through my involvement with the network, I've learned the importance of collaboration and the power of community in driving STEM education forward. The support and resources provided by the network have been invaluable in helping me create engaging and impactful STEM events for my students.  My involvement has also allowed me access to information regarding bursaries, funding and other opportunities which I would not have been aware of. Our students have greatly benefitted from events which would not have been possible without the knowledge and support available from the network and my regular involvement.

My decision to join was driven by my passion for STEM education and my desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. I believe that by working together, we can inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators. The network has given me the platform to share my ideas, learn from others, and contribute to the collective goal of promoting STEM education.

In conclusion, my journey with the EUK Education teacher network has been incredibly rewarding. It has allowed me to connect with inspiring educators and industry professionals, stay updated on the latest STEM developments, and create memorable experiences for my students. I look forward to continuing this journey and making a positive impact on STEM education.
