Erin Sylvester, is a 20-year-old Project Management Degree Apprentice at E.ON, currently working with the Heat Zone team. Based in Sheffield, she’s passionate about developing her skills in sustainable energy and project delivery. She’s excited to keep growing her experience and building a career that helps shape the future of clean energy.

How a degree apprenticeship combines academic learning with real-world engineering

As part of my apprenticeship, I complete placements across different areas of the business. I’m currently working within the Heat Networks team, which focuses on developing low-carbon heating solutions for communities.

In Heat Networks, our projects involve designing and delivering heat networks which are systems that provide sustainable heating through shared energy sources. It’s exciting to see how engineering and project management come together to create practical solutions that reduce emissions and support the UK’s journey towards net zero.

How I got here

I actually began studying veterinary medicine but soon realised that being a vet wasn’t quite the right path for me. What I did enjoy, though, was the hands-on, problem-solving side of science and STEM subjects. That led me to explore degree apprenticeships, where I could apply those interests in a more technical and practical way.

When I found the Project Management Degree Apprenticeship at E.ON, it really appealed to me because it combined academic learning with real-world engineering projects. It’s been the perfect way to gain experience while contributing to meaningful work that supports sustainability and innovation.

Surprises along the way

Something that’s surprised me most is how
interdisciplinary engineering can be, bringing together people from different backgrounds to tackle complex challenges. I’ve also been amazed by how much responsibility and trust apprentices are given so early on. Working alongside experienced engineers and project managers has given me a great insight into how technical and strategic thinking come together to make a real impact.

Looking ahead

I’m excited to keep developing my skills, take on new challenges, and continue contributing to projects that shape a more sustainable energy future. Being part of E.ON during such a transformative time for the energy industry is incredibly motivating. I’m proud to be learning from some of the best in the field.
